Many users dismissed US claims of ASML EUV exports reaching China as exaggerated political BS while trading insults, whereas some expressed hope the situation could lower chip prices or help open-source AI.
No Digg Deeper questions have been answered for this story yet.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told ASML tonight that the US government believes that one of its ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machines may have somehow made its way into China. Senior administration officials said they have evidence that ASML is not acting in good faith.
Drake, waar is de EUV-lithografiemachine?

ASML’s EUV machines may have made their way into China, prompting fresh scrutiny from the Trump administration over possible violations of U.S.-led export restrictions.
A similar alarm was already raised in late 2025, when Reuters reported that former ASML engineers had helped China build an EUV prototype in Shenzhen by reverse-engineering ASML’s technology.
This is no small matter. If China finds a way to copy ASML's technology, they could rapidly catch up in chip production and reach parity with the top Western companies.

@sporadica ASML's ethnic Chinese engineers all defected to China
This was reported last year
The tech community doesn't follow this beat. It's pretty sad.

The most impressive part is that they did it rectally.
Imagine smuggling one of these machines into China.

correct me if i'm wrong, but China getting their hands on an ASML euv machine is a WAAAAAYYYY bigger deal than like some Nvidia chips finding their way over there, fuck

I really want to believe that the US is just preparing a face-saving cope-ramp for news of a domestic Chinese EUV scanner (built by top ASML researchers anyway). But it's too soon. More likely Lutnick wants to build political pressure to eg have ASML relocate to the US.
Does everyone really think ASML misplaced one of these things?
“Reuters reported in December that Chinese scientists have developed a prototype of an EUV machine that was built by a team of former engineers from ASML, an effort described as China's version of the Manhattan Project.” https://www.reuters.com/world/china/us-tells-asml-it-is-concerned-china-may-have-top-chip-tool-bloomberg-news-2026-06-19/
ASML denies these reports.

I no longer even consider this an exaggeration Yes. Lutnick will accuse ASML of daring to ship an EUV tool to China, and in compensation, ASML will be relocated to the US. The Dutch will also bomb the 3GD to wash away the shame. Such is the Hajnali way… (still no Chinese EUV)
@teortaxesTex @not_ellington Bullshit, yes, but I'm betting on Brussels caving in to some concession to amend imaginary transgression.
Wayyyyy late but better late than never!!!
The US has outlined concerns to ASML that one of its top chip machines may have made its way into China, violating export curbs https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-06-19/us-tells-asml-it-s-concerned-china-may-have-top-chip-tool?taid=6a34923f0a5bfc0001a3c526&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_content=business&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter
Did Lutnick derive this idea from 1) the fact that they have a light source prototype and 2) the sensible moderate conjecture that the chinX, lacking soul and divine spark of creation, must have copied it off some physical original? Is he aware who eg Lin Nan is?

@sporadica how the chinese felt when the silk worm got smuggled out of china

@sporadica yes but china extracting its knowledge and releasing it for free will benefit the world
ASML just became the center of a US-China chip fight after Washington said it fears a banned EUV lithography tool may have reached China, while ASML says it never shipped one there.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick outlined concerns to ASML’s senior leaders that one of its top-of-the-line machines may have made its way into China, in violation of US-led export restrictions.
EUV uses 13.5nm light to print the smallest chip patterns, which lets foundries pack more transistors into AI processors and phones.
ASML however, denies selling extreme ultraviolet chip tool to China.
For context, ASML is the sole produce of EUV lithography machines, and each one costs roughly $250M today, with newer High-NA EUV versions closer to $ 400M.
And ASML sold of only 48 EUV systems in 2025, and its market share in EUV is effectively 100%. There are 314 EUV machines in operation around the world, 26 that have been decommissioned — and none in China, according to Bloomberg.
Senior US administration officials said that they have evidence of ASML shipping to China specialty equipment used to transport EUV machines, as well as other components that could be used in EUV systems. The proof of those exports is too sensitive to disclose, they said
Reuters had already reported a Shenzhen EUV prototype built with former ASML engineers, but making EUV light is still far from running a factory-grade production tool.
The hard part is repeatable nanometer precision across optics, masks, software, stages, wafers, maintenance, and defect control.
Shares of ASML fell ~2.6% in morning trading after this report .
China’s blocked access to EUV equipment may be Huawei Technologies Co’s biggest chipmaking hurdle, as it tries to rival Nvidia in AI chips. Huawei’s chip head recently highlighted how the company is building chips without ASML’s EUV machines.
If any EUV tool reached China, it would likely rank as 1 of the biggest known breaches of US-led export controls meant to restrict Beijing’s access to military-useful AI.
There are also gaps between what US and non-US companies can sell to certain Chinese customers on Washington’s entity list, which places stricter limits on named firms than on China overall.
For Huawei, the US has basically blocked nearly all technology access and used rules beyond its borders to apply those limits to firms like ASML. But US rules still permit some overseas dealings with other listed Chinese companies, including Huawei partner SwaySure Technology Co, which joined the list in 2024.
Washington does have the power to force ASML to fully cut ties with SwaySure, but President Donald Trump’s team has not used it.
The Netherlands has already placed curbs on ASML selling EUV machines and some advanced immersion deep ultraviolet, or DUV, lithography tools to China. But the Biden administration grew frustrated when ASML increased shipments of gear facing upcoming bans before certain DUV controls were officially enforced.
Now if indeed EUV export-control violation is proven, that would certainly not mean the US “bans ASML,” because ASML is too central to TSMC, Samsung, Intel, Nvidia, Apple, and US chip policy.
The more realistic damage would be Dutch investigations, fines, forced compliance controls, tougher license rules, and pressure to cut ASML’s China service, spare parts, software updates, and DUV sales, which could hurt the roughly 20% of 2026 revenue ASML expects from China.

@AndreasSch52269 i would think the main concern is not them operating it in the short-term, but reverse engineering it in the medium-term
It's inevitable that China will close the compute gap with the US and ultimately pass the US in amount and cost of compute. They've caught up and surpassed the US in dozens of industries. We ought to anticipate a world where the most cost effective compute hardware is Chinese.

@sporadica Pretty obviously it wasn't "divert an existing machine" but "expertise from lots of ASML former employees (many Chinese...), subcontractors, documents, etc." letting China build one themselves using substantial ASML (and thus US export controlled due to tech) dev work.
